SCAA Now Hiring Science Tutors for the 2017-2018 Academic Year

Science Tutor Responsibilities:

  • Commit to 10 tutoring hours per week for the entire 17-18 academic year in one of the following subjects: biology, physics, or chemistry. Since students may come to you in a variety of courses, we expect our tutors to be familiar with the following courses:
    • For Biology Tutors: Intro Biology, General Biology (Animal Biology, Plant Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology). Ideal candidates would also be able to tutor Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology.
    • For Chemistry Tutors: Intro Chemistry, General Chemistry. Ideal candidates would also be able to tutor Quantitative Analysis and Organic Chemistry.
    • For Physics Tutors: Elementary Physics, Intro Physics, General Physics
  • Commit to a schedule that takes place during SCAA’s drop-in science tutoring hours – 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Thursday
  • Participate in an intensive orientation at the beginning of the Fall/Winter Quarter and attend bi-weekly staff meetings and ongoing training activities throughout the year
  • Conduct in-class outreach presentations to inform students about our services
  • Develop resources (videos, handouts, workshops, etc.) according to CSUEB student needs
  • Use talents to assist in SCAA’s development and operations in areas such as outreach, training, our eTutoring program, etc.

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, senior or grad student at CSUEB for the 17-18 academic year
  • Must have availability for consistent working hours and regular meetings for a maximum of 20 hours a week
  • A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0
  • A developing knowledge of tutoring approaches and an awareness of content resource materials
  • An ability to interact effectively with diverse populations in individual or group settings
  • A completed application (attached) with a brief recommendation by a professor (form provided in application).

Pay Rates and Other Perks:

  • Tutors are paid $13.25 an hour, with the opportunity for raises with each academic year you are a science tutor
  • Tutors are paid for all activities outlined in the “Science Tutor Responsibilities” section
  • Tutors who complete all their training requirements will receive a College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Internationally Certified Level One Tutor credential

Do you often get asked to review papers by your classmates? Interested in learning about how to help others with their writing? Interested in pursuing teaching in the future or developing teaching and communication skills? Consider applying to be a SCAA Writing Tutor – a versatile position that allows you to tutor your peers with opportunities to assist students through an online medium and/or be embedded in one course for one quarter to support students throughout their writing process.

Writing Tutor Responsibilities:

SCAA Writing Tutors will commit a minimum of 10 total hours per week tutoring at the SCAA by committing to one or more of the following programs:

Peer Tutoring
Peer Tutors provide one-on-one tutoring at the SCAA, located on the Upper Mall of the Library.  Please contact Jen Nguyen (jennifer.nguyen@csueastbay.edu) for more information

  • Tutor students individually in drop-in, one-time, or standing appointments.
  • Fully participate in Orientation, training, and meetings.
  • Develop resources (videos, handouts, workshops, etc.)  according to CSUEB
    student needs
  • Use talents to assist in SCAA’s development and operations in areas such as outreach, training, our eTutoring program, etc.

Online Writing Lab

OWL Tutors give comments on papers and send them back to students within 72 hours.

  • Use Microsoft Word to provide comments on papers; Have access to proper technology each quarter to review OWL submissions.
  • Email papers back to the OWL Coordinator and student within 72 hours.
  • Fully participate in Orientation, training, and meetings.

Writing Associates

Writing Associates (undergraduate seniors and graduate students only) are embedded within one course for per quarter to assist faculty and support student writing. Please contact Jen Nguyen (jennifer.nguyen@csueastbay.edu) for more information.

  • Meet with faculty member regularly and attend the class throughout the quarter.
  • With the instructor, establish your role in the course for the quarter, which can include giving written feedback, presenting an in-class workshop, or developing learning materials for students, depending on students’ needs throughout the quarter.
  • Schedule and provide individual and/or group consultations with students in addressing global and local concerns of a writing assignment.
  • Serve as a Peer Tutor for writing at the SCAA by tutoring students individually in drop-in, one-time, or standing appointments.
  • Fully participate in Orientation, training, and meetings, including online components such as weekly Discussion Board posts.

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, senior or grad student at CSUEB for the 17-18 academic year
  • Must have availability for consistent working hours and regular meetings for a maximum of 20 hours a week
  • A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0
  • A developing knowledge of tutoring approaches and an awareness of content resource materials
  • An ability to interact effectively with diverse populations in individual or group settings

SCAA Now Hiring Receptionists for the 2017-2018 Academic Year

Receptionist Responsibilities:

  • Participate in an intensive orientation and attend staff meetings throughout the year
  • Commit to between 5 and 8 hours per week
  • Greet students and other campus staff entering the SCAA and schedule enrolled students using TutorTrac.
  • Receive and respond to incoming calls, take clear and accurate messages, and call students regarding scheduling appointments whenever necessary.
  • Maintain front desk documentation and records
  • Maintain continuity in work flow by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
  • Assist with other duties, including flyer posting, mailing, photocopying, and errands
  • Use talents to assist in SCAA’s development and operations in areas such as publicity

Requirements:

  • Must possess Federal Work Study (FWS) grant from the Federal government
  • Good communication skills
  • Customer service experience/personality
  • Must be detail oriented
  • An ability to interact effectively with diverse populations in individual or group settings

  • Commit to 10 tutoring hours of availability per week by working with our students in courses from remedial math/algebra to calculus and/or introductory statistics.  Although the minimum qualification is a strong background in math up to calculus, we prioritize hiring tutors that can work with students in more advance math/statistics courses.
  • Participate in an intensive orientation at the beginning of the Fall Quarter and attend monthly staff meetings and ongoing bi-weekly training activities throughout the year.
  • Develop resources (videos, handouts, workshops, etc.) according to CSUEB student needs
  • Use talents to assist in SCAA’s development and operations in areas such as outreach, training, observations, etc.

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, senior or grad student at CSUEB for the 17-18 academic year
  • Must have availability for consistent working hours and regular meetings for a maximum of 20 hours a week
  • A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0

SI Leader Responsibilities:

  • Participate in an intensive SCAA orientation and SI training at the beginning of the quarter
  • Attend weekly SI leader meetings and participate in ongoing training activities throughout
    the year
  • Commit to approximately 10 hours per week by attending all course lectures, creating and
    submitting a lesson plan for an SI session consisting of collaborative and interactive learning activities, conducting at least (1) one hour SI session during the week, and meeting with the professor of the course to help incorporate student strategies to enhance conceptual understanding in SI sessions.
  • Use talents to assist in the SI program’s and SCAA’s development

Requirements:

  • A faculty recommendation from the class for which you would like to be an SI Leader
  • Completion of the class for which you are applying with at least a B+
  • A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0, subject matter tutored of at least a 3.3
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior class standing
  • A developing knowledge of tutoring approaches and an awareness of content resource materials
  • An ability to interact effectively with diverse populations in individual or group settings

Here are SCAA’s hours for finals week:

Monday-Wednesday – Drop-in only Math & Writing 10 am-5 pm, Statistics 1-5 pm

Thursday, – Drop in for Math & Writing 10 am-12 noon. No Stats drop in

Friday – Closed

SCAA Summer 2016 Information

Our operating hours for the summer will be Monday-Thursday, 10:00am – 2:00pm. OWL, eTutoring, and one SI session will be available.

Also, the front entrance of the library will be closed due to construction. Everyone must enter through the East Entrance of the library.
